Dubai unveils Blue Line Metro: AED 20 billion leap towards the future

Landmark project to serve one million residents and feature the world’s tallest metro station by 2029His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the primary tunnelling works for the Dubai Metro Blue Line project, which involves an investment of over AED 20.5 billion. The 30-km route comprises a 15.5-km underground section and a 14.5-km stretch above ground. It features 14 stations, including three interchange stations, seven elevated stations, and four underground stations. The line will serve nine key districts with a projected population of around one million under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. His Highness also reviewed the interior designs of the upcoming metro stations and was briefed on the project’s progress.His Highness affirmed that investing in the transport sector is an investment in the future and a key pillar of enhancing Dubai’s global competitiveness. He noted that the Dubai Metro Blue Line represents an extension of an integrated vision aimed at building a more connected, efficient, and sustainable city.

His Highness added: “Our projects in Dubai are delivered to meet the highest international standards, guided by clear plans, precise timelines, and national talent capable of turning vision into tangible achievements. Their delivery is overseen by 180 railway experts and engineers.”The ceremony marking the formal inauguration of the tunnelling works was attended by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE; His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group; His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE Olympic Committee; and several senior officials.Key Milestone

The launch of tunnelling works from the largest underground interchange station in the metro network, spanning more than 44,000 square metres, reflects Dubai’s commitment to providing a smart mobility system. This system enhances quality of life, supports the movement of people and business growth, and connects communities within an integrated urban framework, consolidating Dubai’s position as the best city in the world to live, work, and visit.Anticipating the FutureDubai continues to consolidate a development model based on anticipating the future by developing advanced infrastructure that keeps pace with its economic and urban ambitions.His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was received at the International City 1 Station site by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), along with executives from MAPA, LIMAK, and CRRC Hong Kong, as well as the heads of the consultancy and contracting firms delivering the project.His Highness was briefed on the project’s progression, from the approval of the route in November 2023 to the awarding of the contract in December 2024 and the laying of the foundation stone in June 2025. The project currently stands at 20% completion, with more than 10,000 workers and 500 engineers and experts deployed under Emirati leadership.

Accelerated ExecutionThe consortium has completed more than 13 million work hours without any lost-time injuries. Construction at the stations is progressing at an accelerated pace, exceeding planned completion rates. Bridge works are also ongoing, including the construction of the first metro bridge to span Dubai Creek, extending 1.3 km. Bridge structures are expected to take shape by next June.In line with the project schedule, completion is expected to reach 30% by the end of 2026, with the project set to open on 9/9/2029. His Excellency Al Tayer explained that the combined Dubai Metro and Tram network now extends 101 km and comprises 140 trains. Since its launch in 2009, the network has served nearly 2.8 billion commuters, with daily ridership estimated at one million.Station Designs ShowcasedHis Highness reviewed the architectural designs for the International City 1 interchange station, the largest underground station in the network, with an estimated capacity of 350,000 riders per day.Tallest StationHis Highness also reviewed interior designs for the iconic Emaar Properties Station, which will be the world’s tallest metro station at 74 metres. Designed to evoke luxury and a sense of belonging, the station features soaring walls and natural textures, serving as a gateway to Dubai’s future.Inspired by NatureThe remaining stations feature contemporary designs inspired by the four elements:Air: Three stations symbolizing ambition and ascent through open spaces and light.Water: Two stations reflecting maritime history with flowing forms and calm colors.Earth: Four stations using earthy tones to reflect authenticity and stability.Fire: Two stations symbolizing dynamic energy through vibrant colors and a sense of speed.Three-Pronged Tunnelling WorksHis Highness gave the signal to start the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named ‘Al Wugeisha,’ which will proceed in three directions from International City 1 Station: toward Mirdif, the Auto Market, and Al Warsan. The TBM is 163 metres long, weighs over 2,000 tonnes, and advances 13 to 17 metres per day. It is equipped with high-precision digital guidance systems and an environmentally friendly design that minimizes impact on adjacent ground layers.Boost for Knowledge and Tech EconomyThe Blue Line will connect with the Green Line at Creek Station and the Red Line at Centrepoint Station. It will serve Dubai Silicon Oasis, a hub for innovation, providing 20-minute journeys to Dubai International Airport and reducing traffic congestion by 20% along its corridors.Iconic Design and Proactive PlanningThe Emaar Properties Station, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (the firm behind Burj Khalifa), will accommodate 160,000 riders per day. To ensure quality and efficiency, the RTA has established dedicated ready-mix concrete plants and precast factories specifically for the Blue Line, strengthening supply chains and reducing implementation timelines.
