A Gold Medalist and fellowship-trained surgeon, Dr. Vanesha Varik is one of the few female laparoscopic general surgeons (specialists) contributing to advanced surgical care in the UAE.

Dr. Vanesha Varik is a passionate and skilled laparoscopic and general surgeon, committed to advanced surgical excellence while ensuring comfort, safety, and compassionate treatment for every patient.

She is a specialist in general and laparoscopic surgery, currently practicing at Medcare Hospital in Al Safa, Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital and Medcare Clinic, Mirdif city centre, Dubai. She trained at Goa Medical College and Hospital in India, completed her Master’s in General Surgery with 3 Gold Medals, holds a FIAGES accredited fellowship in laparoscopic and GI surgery from Mumbai. She is also a Member of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon of Glasgow.

Her Academic Record

Dr. Varik studied medicine at Goa Medical College and Hospital, where she completed her MBBS before pursuing a Master’s degree in General Surgery at the same institution. She topped the MS General surgery exams at Goa University, securing 3 prestigious gold medals.

She also received the Jindal Jubilee, the Dr. Wilfred D’Souza and the Late Mrs. Laxmibai Raghunath Shirodkar Memorial Prize and gold. These are competitive, merit-based honours, and receiving three of them at a single sitting reflects the consistency of her academic performance.

Following her Master’s, she completed her Fellowship in Laparoscopic GI surgery (FIAGES) at Mumbai at a high-volume surgical center with a strong track record in laparoscopic training. The fellowship gave her focused, hands-on exposure to minimally invasive surgical techniques before she entered independent practice.

Her Career Before Dubai

Dr. Varik began her surgical career as a Junior and Senior Resident at Goa Medical College and Hospital, before taking on a position as Surgery Registrar and Laparoscopic and GI Fellow at Bhatia General Hospital in Mumbai. She then worked at Breach Candy Hospital, and subsequently as a Consultant in General Surgery at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Mumbai

Each role added practical experience across different patient volumes and case types. By the time she relocated to the UAE, she had worked in several surgical environments and handled a wide range of general and laparoscopic cases.

In Dubai, she joined Aster Hospital in Mankhool in 2015 as a Specialist Laparoscopic and General Surgeon, before moving to her current position at MEDCARE Hospitals & Clinic in 2024. She is a licensed Specialist under Dubai Health Authority (DHA) & Ministry of Health and Prevention [MOHAP, Sharjah] , UAE.

Her Surgical Scope

Dr. Varik’s practice covers a broad range of general and laparoscopic procedures. On the laparoscopic side, this includes cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repairs of multiple types – inguinal, ventral, paraumbilical, incisional, and Spigelian – intestinal resections and excision of mesenteric and enteric cysts and tumours.

She also performs thyroid and parathyroid surgery, parotidectomy, breast surgery for benign and malignant conditions, proctology procedures including haemorrhoidectomy, fistula, and fissure repair, soft tissue tumour excision, tracheostomy, and stoma formation. Her practice covers both elective and emergency surgical cases.

Why Some Patients Specifically Seek a Female Surgeon

In the UAE, the patient population is highly diverse. Women living in Dubai come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, and several of them, for personal, cultural, or religious reasons, prefer to be treated by a female doctor, particularly for procedures involving the abdomen, chest, or breast.

Female laparoscopic and general surgeons with Dr. Varik’s level of training and case volume are not common in the UAE. For patients who place importance on having a female surgeon and for whom that preference has previously meant settling for someone less experienced, or waiting longer, she represents a practical option that does not require a compromise on clinical quality.

She consults in English, Hindi, Konkani, Marathi and minimal essential Arabic.
